As a musician and producer Robert M Powell has worked with a diverse array of artists from around the world including Titos Sompa Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, Shafqat Ali Khan & Sukhawat Ali Khan, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim, Shana Morrison, Sachiko Kanenobu, Kevin Brennan and Claddagh, Suru Ekeh, Deva Premal, Kingfish, and bluesman Roy Rogers.
Through his work with Amnesty International he has produced and performed on recordings by Peter Gabriel, John Lee Hooker, Jackson Browne and others.
Robert has played in various San Francisco Bay Area bands over the years including Clothesline Revival (with Conrad Praetzel), The Venusians, Kundalini Boombox (with Kit Walker and Celso Alberti), Scrap Pile (with Susie Davis, Jimmy Sanchez, Bruce 'Creeper' Kurnow and other Bay Area luminaries), Opafire, The Skillbillies (with Al 'Bonestar' Milburn) and the list goes on (because he's lived in the Bay Area for a dang long time).
Current production projects include singer-songwriter Paul D Miller’s second album 'In The Blink Of An Eye', as well as albums for Teamo & Boy Lion, Talia Rose, Julie Layne and the second album in the Anatomix Comix children’s music series, ‘Spare Parts’.
A multi-instrumentalist, Robert plays all manner of guitars, including pedal steel guitar, as well as a variety of other stringed and not-so-stringed instruments.
Robert currently performs primarily with Kyle Alden and the Reckless Flames (featuring Scott Thunes, Howie Cort and David Smadbeck) as well as with Hologramatron (featuring Barry Cleveland, Michael Manring, Celso Alberti, Rick Walker and Amy X Newberg).
As a composer Robert has scored for numerous films including the award-winning documentaries ‘El Dorado’ (Cine Golden Eagle Award), ‘Forest Through The Trees’ for the Discovery Channel, ‘Texas Gold’ (Best Doc NYC Short Film Festival 2007), ‘Counting Sheep’ (Emmy, Best Doc, Best Cinematography 2006), the dramatic feature ‘Lady and the Tiger’ along with bassist Rob Wasserman, the ABC Saturday Night prime-time TV series ‘Early Edition’, as well as various multi-media projects including the Alladin game for Disney.
Robert works primarily out of his recording studio, The Underbelly, in Marin County California.
